NEWS CLIPS Loparex Shares Plans WILLOWBROOK, IL | Loparex Group has signed a Share Purchase Agreement with Mondi Coating concerning the sale of Loparex Oy (Lohja plant), Loparex Ltd. (Glossop plant), and Loparex’s printing and slitting terminals in Poland and Thailand. “The decision to exit these operations was made as part of Loparex Group’s strategy to create sustainable growth by focusing on certain value-added products and expansion in emerging markets,” says Pentti Kallio, Loparex Group CEO. The Loparex Group now will consist of Loparex LLC with operations in Iowa City, IA, Hammond, WI, Eden, NC, Cullman, AL, and the Willowbrook head office; Loparex BV in the Netherlands; Loparex Asia Pacific in Guangzhou, China, and Hong Kong, and Kaygee-Loparex in India, a 50% joint venture. The sale will be closed after the necessary approvals have been obtained from competition authorities, estimated to be July 1, 2008. Sweet-Smelling Building HELSINKI, FINLAND | Ahlstrom, a supplier of high-performance, fiber-based materials, received the French trophy of the Ecological and Economical Technologies for its photocatalytic filter media utilized in what is said to be the first anti-odor building for the storage of sludge. The competition was organized by ADEME (French environment and energy control agency), and the prize was presented during Pollutec Horizons 2007, held in Villepinte, France. The modular anti-odor building comprises an Ahlstrom filter media integrated in the flexible wall structure that captures and destroys the organic pollutants to purify the air. The technology, developed and patented by Ahlstrom, consists of a photocatalytic media “combining a layer of active carbon with a nonwoven, which successfully fixes the titanium dioxide, a natural catalyst,” says an Ahlstrom press release. Tel: +44 (0) 1823 283411 �� NYC Mandates Plastic Bag Recycling NEW YORK, NY | The Progressive Bag Affiliates of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) reports passage of the New York City Plastic Carryout Bag Recycling Law. The law requires any store in New York City that uses plastic bags and occupies 5,000 sq ft or more to establish an in-store recycling program for plastic bags. The legislation, developed in close cooperation with environmental groups, retailers, and bag manufacturers, makes it easy for New Yorkers to recycle bags throughout its five boroughs, according to a press release. The ACC elaborates “…In-store recycling systems provide an easy way for customers to recycle their bags. New York is the first major US city to mandate in-store recycling in large stores.
