out more informed operational decisions was growing. Research was carried out in cooperation with the University of Western Ontario to try to
determine GIC flows from real-time
deviations between measured and
estimated reactive power flows. Hydro
One in-house research on GIC simulation was now fully engaged. Using the
original NRCan solver as a starting
point, a project was initiated to develop a real-time GIC solver that used
actual system configuration and
supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) information from the
network management system and
real-time geomagnetic-field measurements from NRCan's Ottawa magnetometer as input. Conceptually, the
new GIC solver would overcome the
limitation of a static network and use
SCADA and state-estimator information (including measurements from
the GIC monitoring network) to better
inform control-room operators. A large
number of offline studies were carried
