components located on the landing
gear is challenging. The TM was
instrumented with several thermocouples to measure the temperature
of significant components, i.e., the
motor winding end turns and bearings, as well as locations impacting
the heat transfer. Figure 14 shows
the thermocouple locations.
The motor was tested for steadystate loads, transient loads, and taxi
profiles. The thermal results for a taxi
profile are shown in Figure 15.

The measurement of the output
torque and speed over the entire operating range is required. The input
power to the motor, typically characterized by the pulsewidth-modulated
input voltage to the motor, must be
measured. Generally, a digital highspeed power wattmeter is used. From
the input and output power measurements, the heat loss magnitude and
distribution must be confirmed to verify
the thermal performance and analysis.
Discrepancies in heat loss distribution
can result in higher-than-expected
component temperatures.
Typically, motors instrumented with
multiple thermocouples must be operated with the objective of observing the
power electronic controller at multiple
loads and load profiles to confirm proper heat loss distribution and acceptable
resulting temperatures. Compatibility with the power electronic controller requires the verification and finalization of

Due to the interdependence of several
factors described previously, the development testing of the TM can be
quite involved (see the summary in
Table 4). For example, the mechanical
output torque and speed requirements need verification. Typically, a load-measuring
device is used.
