Off-Grid Energy Challenge, sponsored by General Electric,
the United States African Development Foundation, and
the United States Agency for International Development.
With a combination of grant and internal funds, GVE electrified the remaining homes of Egbeke with two 9-kW
solar microgrids. Cumulatively, the three solar systems
reached nearly 3,000 people, created 36 new jobs in the
community, and offset more than 150 t of CO2 annually
that would have been generated by candles and kerosene lamps.
Subsequently, GVE formed a set of partnerships with
the IEEE, the Bank of Nigeria, and the United Nations
Development Program to build three microgrids in the villages of Bisanti, Kolwa, and Onono-Anam (Figure 6). Each

of these villages has roughly 200 to 500 homes, schools, a
health center, and a few churches or mosques. All the
community members depended on candles and kerosene
for their energy needs, except a small number of households that had gasoline generators. As in the Egbeke village, lack of access to electricity was the primary factor
inhibiting the growth of local businesses.
The 24-kW Bisanti microgrid constructed by this program now serves more than 200 homes and businesses,
and it is the largest microgrid in Nigeria. In September
2016, the community celebrated a year of uninterrupted
power supply, which is a level of reliability enviable by
even the most technologically developed African cities.
