T IS MY PRIVILEGE TO PRESENT TO YOU THE FIRST ISSUE
of volume four of IEEE Electrification Magazine. We have
come a long way since the successful launch of the
print version of the magazine in the fall of 2013, and covered
many topics in the general area of new electrification. This particular issue has six articles contributed from different parts of the
world, and deals with intelligent systems.
In the first article, the author discusses how smart cities can
create new markets for industry, encourage social engagement,
and improve quality of life. The second article highlights how the
development of the smart village concept can empower off-grid
communities. The third article addresses how microgrids can
enhance the resilience of the electricity grid and avoid, or at least
minimize, the effects of electric power blackouts. The fourth article is more technical, where the authors tell us how cosimulation
studies can help implement the smart grid. Then we present an
article highlighting the ground vehicle electrification work in the
U.S. Army, focusing on power electronics and electric drives work.
The issue is wrapped up with an article that reviews the challenges and propulsion strategies in electric cars. The titles of the six
articles include the following:
1) "Public-Private Partnerships"
2) "Fueling Sustainability
3) "Front Lines Against the Darkness"
4) "Enabling Smart Grid Cosimulation Studies"
5) "Toward Ground Vehicle Electrification in the U.S. Army"
6) "Flying Cars"
Going forward in 2016, the three remaining issues will focus on dc
microgrids, power system in railways, and smart buildings/transactive
energy. Please contact me, or any of the editors/coeditors if you are
interested in proposing any special issue of this magazine for 2017.
