HE COST OF ENERGY STORAGE HAS COME DOWN
drastically in the past ten years. In addition, the size
and weight of storage systems have decreased significantly, while, at the same time, their capacity, rated voltage, and
current output continue to increase. The critical function of
energy storage for renewable energy integration into the grid is
to balance load and generation while maintaining the frequency and voltage at close to normal values to ensure the integrity
of customer loads. The future market design gives incentives to
storage owners to profit from price variations during the day
while occasionally providing paid-for-service ancillary functions
that the storage is capable of delivering to the grid.
For this special issue, we are fortunate to have many contributors who come from diverse backgrounds and countries representing four continents. The
