renewable power generation and the
development of fuel cells, plug-in EVs
(PEVs), and EVs. NREL's energy-storage
expertise supports the electrification
of transportation and energy-storage
testing interacted with renewable generation and the electric grid through
projects focusing on storage research
and development (R&D).

supply and demand.

Large industrial, municipal, and commercial energy users are increasingly
adopting alternative energy resources
and technologies to supply their electricity needs, driven by the goal to cut
costs, ensure reliability, and reduce their carbon footprint.
Distributed energy storage is a technology option that can
address many such needs, with promising potential for
future lucrative markets. Distributed energy-storage systems (DESSs), in combination with advanced power electronic converters, are anticipated to have a significant
impact on power systems operations and reliability. They
offer electrical utilities an alternative approach to grid
energy management. DESSs can serve as an enabling technology that increases the hosting capacity of a distribution

system for wind and solar generation.
Other services include deferred distribution system upgrade, increased reliability
of the distribution system, reduced distribution losses, improved power quality,
mitigated outages, demand response,
critical load support, and the possibility
for microgrid operation.
Figure 2 shows the U.S. DOE's Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF),
located at NREL, which was designed
to conduct megawatt-scale integrated
systems R&D. The facility contains
large-scale battery and photovoltaic
(PV) simulators together with megawatt-scale grid simulation to develop
new integrated systems that include
energy storage. The facility uses advanced power hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems to develop new thermal,
electrical, and control systems. The ESIF is LEED Platinum
Certified and is a designated DOE User Facility. The facility
design includes both ac and dc research electrical buses
that allow the laboratories within the ESIF to be electrically
connected. Experiments are controlled and managed using
an advanced supervisory control and data acquisition system. The facility includes natural gas, hydrogen, and both
low- and medium-voltage outdoor test facilities. The facility
