Japanese Experience in Energy Storage
for a Distribution Network with
High-Penetration Renewable Energy

HIS ARTICLE PROVIDES AN
overview of the Japanese
advances in battery storage
projects for high-penetration conditions of renewable energy resources.
Several domestic and international
projects promoted by the New Energy
and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) are introduced and evaluated.
NEDO was established in 1980 and
is the largest Japanese public
research and development management organization. The main role of
NEDO is to promote the development
of advanced industrial, environmental, new energy, and energy conservation technologies. After 2000, an
important objective of NEDO was to
provide solutions to problems regarding the high penetration of distributed and renewable resources connected to power grids. Therefore, the
development of energy management
systems (EMSs), energy storage applications, and forecasting methods are
demonstrated targets of NEDO's
objectives. NEDO promoted several
projects linked to the grid-connection
problem of renewable energy, as
shown in Figure 1.
After 2010, NEDO started several
international smart communityrelated projects including smart grid
technologies. The first project was a

collaboration between New Mexico
and Japan. The current projects are in
the United States, Europe, and Asia, as
shown in Figure 2.
