technological application, asset management, system operation and optimization, market facilitation, and integrated system
tools. These activities are mainly designed to support the security of supply of the system, to increase its ability to integrate
a generation mix based on a higher share of renewables, and
to enable the future development of the power system. Per the
EEGI road map for 2013-2022, the activities are grouped into
five clusters, as shown in Figure 1.

DSO R&D Priorities
As with TSOs, R&D activities performed by DSOs are not
so much related to technological developments but to system
design, technological application, asset management, system
operation and optimization, market facilitation, and the integration of new system tools. Because of the direct connection to
practically every energy consumer, however, and due to the fact
that significant RES generation is connected to distribution networks, the DSO cluster activities emphasize integrating customers and new generation. Figure 2 presents details about the R&D
topics that fall into each of the five DSO clusters.
This list of R&D topics organized into five clusters was
derived from a clear set of objectives for DSOs:
✔✔ a measurable reduction in peak demand and overall
consumption (expected to be 5-20%)

Grid Architecture

✔✔ models for customer behavior and segmentation under

different conditions

power consumption
✔✔ optimization of consumption based on distributed generation production (€30 savings per year, per customer)
✔✔ optimization of energy consumption, storage, and production across all "daily activities" (expected reduction in consumption of 10%, corresponding to €60
savings per year, per customer)
✔✔ integration of electric vehicles
✔✔ integration of heat pumps
✔✔ ways to avoid or defer investments in the LV network.
In turn, these objectives are expected to translate into:
✔✔ lower peak demand on distribution and transmission
systems
✔✔ reduced generation investment and cost from controlling peak energy use
✔✔ improved environmental performance from peak
reduction and overall energy conservation.

The next step for the electricity networks R&D road map, to
commence in 2015, is the integration of R&D on storage
