Three books are reviewed
in this issue. The first book, Power
System SCADA and Smart Grids,
according to its reviewer, is "a very
thoughtful resource on such an important, and rapidly changing, topic."
The second book, Sprague Electric:
An Electronics Giant's Rise, Fall,
and Life After Death, is required
reading, the reviewer concludes, for
"anyone interested in the evolution
of technology and anyone who is a
manager, engineer, and executive of
any organization." The final book,
Practical Power Systems Operation,
provides "a comprehensive picture
for power system operation for power
industry practitioners and academics," the reviewer concludes.

Much has been written and discussed
concerning the smart grid, but there
has been little written concerning the
intelligent systems that have been operating the existing grids or will operate
the grid of the future. Power System
SCADA and Smart Grids by Mini s.
Thomas and John d. Mcdonald not
only gives the reader the history of
what has allowed our electric systems
to operate so well today but shows one
a glimpse of the future we can expect.
Given that little has been written for
either the student or the practitioner on
this topic, this book provides the reader
with an understanding of the function of

supervisory control and data acquisition
(sCada) systems as well as the many
systems they rely on to function in the
manner we have grown to expect. The
authors then move to innovations that
are changing the power industry to a
truly smart grid with
the inherent opportunities and associated
challenges that come
with dramatic change.
This book is a musthave text on this subject. it provides not
only students but those
who deal with sCada insight into the
various technologies
and systems that exist
along with their differences-both strengths
and weaknesses. each
chapter focuses on different aspects of this important topic.
Chapter 1 gives us the history of
power system automation and serves
as an introduction of sCada systems
used in the power system. as technology advanced and communications
improved, utilities quickly realized
that these systems would allow them
to reduce maintenance costs and improve restoration by deploying them.
other advantages of sCada in power
systems are also discussed.
Chapter 2 provides the reader with
sCada fundamentals from the various
components used such as remote terminal
units (rTUs), intelligent electronic devices (ieds), data concentrators/merging
units, master stations, and the human-machine interface. The system dependency
on communications systems and pro-

tocols are introduced. For the educator, a
sCada laboratory is described along with
a lab field design. several sCada case
studies are also noted, providing useful examples of practical implementations.
Chapter 3 provides a deeper discussion
on sCada communications, which includes various topology considerations and
data communication
modes. This chapter
is extremely useful in
discussing the benefits
of the various sCada
communication protocol architectures along
with their evolution.
The move to more advanced protocols for
use in the smart grid
are discussed and how
they transitioned from
proprietary systems to the standardized systems being deployed today, including synchrophasor standard, ieee
C37.118, and wireless technologies for
home automation. Guided media with
their advantages and disadvantages are
noted from twisted pair to the more
advanced systems such as optical fiber
and various telephone-based systems.
Finally, the chapter discusses various
unguided media such as microwave. it
closes with the security considerations
and challenges that lie ahead for sCada and the smart grid.
Chapter 4 moves the reader from
rTU-centric architecture systems to the
latest bus-based digital substations. This
is an excellent chapter with its discussion of the multifunction ied and how
its use is transforming the way we view
