power & energy society (pes) leadership has championed initiatives that
have made major contributions to our
industry. pes initiatives are catalysts
to improved industry operation and the
research, development, and deployment of new technologies necessary to
address grid complexities. our industry
is rapidly changing, which demands new
and innovative ways of planning and
operating, e.g., the integration of distributed energy resources, energy storage, and electrical vehicles. pes must
continue its leadership role and become
even more beneficial to the industry.
our society's strength and value to its
members lies in its ability to support our
membership in creating and implementing new technical ideas and sharing and
applying best practices through collaboration. By expanding our communities globally, members and industry benefit from
the sharing of regional perspectives, challenges, priorities, and successes. It enables
pes to make a difference in modernizing
global electrical power delivery to serve
energy consumer demands for reliable,
secure, and economical services while
addressing environmental needs. the ultimate pes community success metric is
membership growth and retention. When

portfolio. IEEE Electrification Magazine, which launched in 2013 and is provided to all members of the Ieee power
& energy, power electronics, and Industry applications societies, received the
prestigious apeX new magazine award.
our three long-running transactions have
enjoyed respectable and, in the case of
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems,
growing ratings. universities world over
require graduate students to publish
transactions papers to receive advanced
degrees. this is testimonial to high quality peer review. thank you, volunteers,
for contributing your valuable time and
skills to this demanding activity!
the impact of two new transactions, IEEE Transactions on Smart
Grid and IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, is only beginning to
become apparent, and the expectations
are that they will follow in the footsteps of their forbearers. IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid has become so
popular that it will be growing to six
issues per year, from four, to reduce the
size of the published volumes. special
issues of the journals have been published or are planned with an objective of building communities around
them. IEEE Power & Energy Technology Systems Journal is our newest
portfolio addition. It is an open access
journal designed to share industry best
practices. Your feedback is welcome
and your participation is encouraged
to help us achieve continuing interest
from authors and readers.

participation in the development of
standards, guides, and technical reports
has helped our membership enhance and
protect current and future investments,
shape industry practices, and influence
new developments. pes works very
closely with the Ieee standards association to better serve our industry by releasing standards in timely fashion. since
october 2015, Ieee has approved a total
of 122 project authorization requests, with
the pes leading 48 of them. Ieee has
approved 70 standards, of which 26 were
released by pes. pes members comprise
10% of Ieee's overall worldwide membership but publishes more standards
than any other society (on average over
40% of all Ieee standards). pes continues to actively contribute to numerous
other standards, for example, the foundational Ieee 1547, Series of Interconnection Standards, and Ieee 2030, Series
of Smart Grid Standards, which consist
of a group of standards, guidelines, and
recommended practices covering a comprehensive set of aspects pertaining to
the grid integration of distributed energy
resources (ders) including energy storage, and covering interoperability aspects
of grid components, ders, controllable
loads, and end-use applications. Ieee, in
coordination with the national Institute
of standards and technology (nIst)
and the u.s. department of energy
(doe), has sponsored numerous committees, working groups, and standards
to address the needs of the electric power
industry pertaining to distributed generation integration.
