his opening speech, the automatic shuttle
was the beginning of the next step on the
continuing road of technological advancement. Contract S-107 left behind a strong
legacy as the operating experience of an
actual train with real passengers aboard
provided a unique knowledge pool from
which engineers of future systems were
able to draw.
While modern systems employ computers and microprocessors rather than
relays in many instances, the evolution of the basic concepts of S-107 are
found in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, PATCO system and those systems
in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, Georgia;
Baltimore, Maryland; and Miami, Florida. The use of rear-car loops to determine proper train berthing before doors
are opened is still used in Washington,
D.C. Today, the new communicationsbased train control technology based on
radio links has been placed in service
on the Canarsie line. Automatic operation started on 24 February 2009, almost
exactly a half century after NYCTA
Chairman Patterson revealed the initial
concept at that Brooklyn luncheon. It
is now being installed on the Flushing
line, the fourth line considered under the
1959 scheme. Recently, hawaii has announced plans to install a driverless outdoor elevated transit system to ease road

congestion on the island of Oahu. Whatever the ultimate method of rapid transit
control and automation, it all began under New York's famed 42nd Street more
than a half century ago with New York
City Transit Authority Contract S-107.
Mr. Patterson would be proud.
