number of cycles of about 40 in general," with the option: "in special cases
one may apply higher values." After

a few applications elsewhere, 40 Hz
declined to an insignificant quantity
compared to 50 Hz, which became the

"European" frequency and standard in
four and a half continents. Noteworthy is the other peculiar frequency of
42 Hz that was widespread, mainly in
Hungary and Italy (see Figure 3), during a long period of time. The real reason behind was the decision made by
the Ganz Company in Budapest to select "5,000 alternations per minute for
ac," (equaling 5,000/2/60) = 41 2/3 Hz),
because, with markedly lower alternation numbers, light produced by an
arc-lamp would have been perceived as
flickering and tiring for the human eye.
In my article on the development
of the 50- and 60-Hz frequency standards, published in this magazine in
2011, I referred, among others, to two
articles by Thomas Blalock, who portrayed a variety of frequencies in the
United States, including 25 Hz for the
