addition to the import/export functions, the eel River HVdc
station provides various ancillary services that are important
for reliability of the new Brunswick bulk power system.
as illustrated in figure 3, the station is connected to the
230-kV systems via 12 60-MVa, single-phase, four winding
converter transformers, each with two secondary windings
operating at 34.5/19.9 kV in a delta-wye configuration and a
tertiary winding operating at 13 kV delta. the fifth, 11th, and
13th harmonic and high-pass filters are connected to the 13-kV
bus feed by the tertiary windings. there are three ±110 Mvar
synchronous condensers connected to the 13-kV system (two
on the HQ side and one on the nBp side) that provide the majority of the reactive power requirements of the HVdc circuits. in
addition there are high-pass filters on the 230-kV system in
nBp and HQ.

Eel River HVdc Station
Refurbishment Project
after more than 40 years of successful operation, nBp decided
to invest in the eel River HVdc station life extension with the
same rating and configuration shown in table 3. nBp engaged
the services of amec foster Wheeler to assist with executing
the eel River HVdc station life-extension project. serving as
the owner's engineer, they prepared design packages and provided technical support, construction oversight, and project
management support throughout the project life cycle.

the main considerations were the following:
✔ obsolescence of parts, including the original ge control cards, which required onsite repairs or were one
of a kind and not replaceable, placing station operations at risk.
✔ access to power markets continuing to be financially
beneficial to nBp from energy purchases for in-province use, sale of excess in-province generation, and
tariffs for transmission to neighboring utilities
