harmonic filters, shunt capacitor banks, and synchronous
condensers. The filters and shunt capacitors help satisfy the
steady-state reactive needs, while the synchronous condensers supply the dynamic reactive power needs at the inverter
terminals. When the Haenam-Jeju link was originally built,
the synchronous condensers at the site were repurposed gas
turbine generators. A clutch was added to allow the machines
to operate as condensers once they were started. Because the
life expectancy of traditional rotating machines tends to be
longer than that of power electronics, it can be reasonable
and economical to apply a repurposed machine as a synchronous condenser at a dc link. In such a case, however, when
the link is being refurbished, it should not be surprising to
find ancillary equipment like a synchronous condenser in
need of replacement. In this case, the machines were originally 68 MVA gas turbines and were already used when they
came to Jeju island to supply power. When the dc link was
built, they were considered +45/-23.5 Mvar synchronous

the existing converter station on Jeju island. In the intervening period since the first link was commissioned in 1994, the
Jeju island energy development plan has included the addition of a significant amount of renewable generation, mainly
wind. With the addition of a second HVdc link, the strategy
is to transfer the power between the island and mainland in
either direction with maximum flexibility. The second link
is rated at 2 × 200 MW, slightly higher than the first link.
Following the completion of the new HVdc link, KEPCO
is taking the opportunity to upgrade the control systems at
both converter stations on the first link, to give an extra lease
of life to the overall system (see Figure 9).
Another component that is being replaced is the synchronous condensers. It is not unusual to find synchronous
condensers used in support of the inverter terminal of an
HVdc link. These condensers can provide some of the
reactive power needs and also increase the local short circuit strength. Reactive power support at Jeju consists of ac
