the first article, "Modernizing the
california Grid," discusses how DeR
adoption, ultimately a customer choice,
is a significant driver for the overall
modernization of the electrical grid.
Specifically, high levels of DeRs can
be part of longer-term electric system
planning, and the DeRs may provide a
vast array of additional benefits that may
have value locally or to the larger electric
system. a review of ongoing research
projects focused on DeR planning and
benefit definition is given as well as a
comprehensive overview of demonstration projects planned for the near future
in california to provide insight into various DeR values and challenges.
"time and location," the second
article, continues the discussion of the
value of DeRs and describes study
approaches for determining what certain values might be. the value of
DeRs varies considerably depending
on where the resource is located and
which service is being valued, which itself can vary from circuit to circuit and
system to system. the authors look at
using DeRs as an alternative for some
traditional utility investments such as
deferring circuit upgrades due to load
growth. an excellent discussion of distribution circuit construction practices/
topologies is also included and provides
insight into how future distribution systems may need to be configured to not
only enable high levels of DeRs but
also realize their full value to the overall system.
"change in Brooklyn and Queens"
focuses on changes in electrical distribution planning that need to occur to
incorporate the consideration of alternative solutions, including the use of
various types of DeRs, into the planning process. high load growth in the
Brooklyn-Queens, new York, area led
to the need to choose either "traditional" electrical expansion or potentially
lower cost solutions involving multifaceted alternatives including DeRs (solar,
distributed generation, fuel cells and
energy storage technologies), among
