Pserc has also been involved in
efforts by the Pes to promote power
engineering education and careers,
such as through studies and surveys of
power engineering university programs
and the creation of the scholarship
Plus Initiative to support undergraduate education.

Final Comments
Pserc's vision is that universities and
industry will collaborate to address the
research and education needs of the new
power industry. This vision challenges
both university researchers and industry members to work in ways that may
be new to them. researchers must collaborate across universities and across
disciplines. as a result, researchers have
to learn new ways of communicating
concepts and insights to colleagues in different disciplines, conducting research in
a collaborative organization, and using
techniques for collaboration at a distance.
a challenge for industry members is that
not only do they have to consider the research and education needs from their
company's perspective, but they also have
to factor into their decisions the needs of
the industry as a whole. researchers and
industry members both perceive that the
research and education needs are tremendous as the industry evolves, so they are
responding creatively and energetically
to the challenges they face in working together to address those needs.
Finally, university and industry members recognize that support of Pserc's
research program is intertwined with
support of its educational mission. stu-

dent education is enhanced through student participation in Pserc projects,
improved awareness of industry issues
due to Pserc activities, and the expanded industry knowledge that Pserc
faculty bring to their classrooms as a
result of the industry-university relationships Pserc fosters. Judging
from the current state of electric power
programs throughout the world, it has
accomplished its original intent to help
stem the decline in power programs is
the United states.
