The smart grid provides improved
reliability and gives customers
information they can use to take
control of their electrical usage.
CSMART leverages the unique
capabilities of academia, utilities,
and private enterprise to determine
the best ways to deploy and support
advanced smart grid technologies.
The center supports and publishes
research on the impacts of these
cutting-edge technologies on new
and existing business models.
The CSMART project team was
able to implement these solutions
into the OSIsoft software system
and develop new solutions due to
the its open lab organization. The
organization allows students to be
on project teams, take on the role of
project manager, and work closely
with a project sponsor from one of
the participating companies. The
contribution of time and resources
from generous donors supporting CSMART has allowed us to
expand and bring more students on

shifting of nonessential microgrid
loads) for minimizing the cost of
supplying the microgrid load. At
times, the master controller will
consider demand response rather
than power purchases from the utility grid. The hierarchical protection
scheme is based on localized differential protections in seven loops and
four coordinated protection levels
that are implemented by communication-assisted digital directional
relays and high-reliability distribution system switches.
IIT faculty and students have
integrated all of these pieces and
added the ability to operate the
microgrid in island mode, isolated
from the local utility, with a normally open cross-tie between the
substations, resulting in a fully functioning, self-healing, microgrid.
