✔ What are the applications of wireless networked LED

streetlight control technology that are not explored in
smart cities, and how can we advance them?
Answers to these questions have been explored through
comprehensive cyberphysical security testing, analyses of
the pilot system's actual benefits, configuration testing of the
pilot system, and student- and faculty-led research exploring
new opportunities available with this exciting technology at
IIT. The investigations and results of parts of Phase 2 are
detailed in the following sections.

Phase 3
Phase 3 of the smart streetlight pilot program will expand the
network of LED streetlights across the campus to test the scalability of the network and of the software as a pilot for largescale implementation in the ComEd service area. In addition
to scalability, CSMART will be monitoring and reporting on
the actual benefits of our existing pilot, to fortify the business
case for networked LED streetlight expansion and build support for what we consider a necessary step that businesses,
municipalities, and local governments must take toward
more efficient lighting. Throughout this phase, CSMART

will integrate controls into the IIT facilities' energy management system and Public Safety's security systems, including
maintenance e-mail alerts and scheduled maintenance notifications, and have the streetlights automatically respond to
certain campus safety alerts or Public Safety's searches or
drills. The CSMART solution to modernize the streetlighting
system at the IIT microgrid and the project team research into
resiliency proves the environmental and financial viability
and security benefits of similar systems and provides a readily reproducible model that benefits users on both large and
small scales and helps everyone see a little smarter.

The project team has combined existing talents and developed new skills around power engineering, networking, and
database management to create a SCADA system for the
IIT microgrid. The IIT SCADA system, which is developed
based on the OSIsoft software (see Figure 11), is an excellent
tool to advance research on microgrids because it takes key
aspects necessary for engineers to successfully manage a
