Driven by its fast-growing high-tech inDustry during the 2010s, china has witnessed an upsurge in
data rates from online shopping, mobile internet services,
and industrial informatization, among other uses. as awareness of big data has increased, multiple industries have
begun to embrace analytics to exploit value from all these
data. the electric power industry, using modern information and communication technologies and millions of newly
deployed smart meters, is an important forerunner in the big
data analytics field.
figure 1 depicts a framework of big data analytics in
power system applications. the data collection process starts
with various sources such as smart meters, energy markets,
weather sensors, and government agencies. People can then
apply advanced statistics and machine-learning techniques
such as time-series analysis, clustering, and deep learning
to generate actionable insights. these insights can be used
to improve grid operations and planning as well as customer
experience or be leveraged by third parties for other business uses.

over the past five years, the chinese government has devoted
a significant amount of funding to big data analytics for the
power industry. the state Development and reform commission of china has issued development guidelines for an
"internet plus" smart-energy strategy (the energy internet),
in which big data are considered a key enabling technology.
from 2013 to 2017, the national natural science foundation of china (nsfc) sponsored more than 27 electrical engineering big data analytics-related projects, with
total funding greater than ¥22.45 million (approximately
