a focus on practical smart grid solutions
The 2017 InTegraTed SmarT
grid Technologies (ISgT) Conference
in Washington, d.C., marked the ninth
ISgT event held in north america. Since
2010, ISgT has become the premier con-
ference focusing on practical smart grid
solutions for the electric utility industry.
The conference has also grown from its

global presence with 25 ISgT confer-
ences held in countries across the world
through the end of 2017 (Figure 1).
Why ISgT? I recall the first time I
heard the term "smart grid." my first
thought was that, in over 40 years in
the utility industry, I never recalled a
"dumb grid" being designed. But with
improvements in communication and
computer technology, the opportunity
to resolve the limitations and costs of
the electrical grid has become apparent
and allows smarter grids to be developed.
Technological limitations on metering no
longer force peak power prices to be aver-
aged out and passed on to all consumers
equally. In parallel, the use of substantial
amounts of renewable energy has changed
the characteristics of the electrical system.
With highly variable sources of renew-
ables, the need for more sophisticated
