1902. A total of 15 units were installed,
each with twin horizontal turbines
driving a three-phase, 25-Hz, 12-kV
generator. The first three units with
twin 5,000-hp turbines and generators rated 7,500 kW went into service
on 1 July 1905. Later units were rated
12,000  hp and 13,000  hp. Although
the powerhouse floor was 26 ft (7.9 m)
above mean water level, it was subject
to flooding when ice jams occurred in
the gorge.
During the first five years of
service, Ontario Power sold 35,000
hp to the Niagara Lockport & Ontario
Power Company (NL&OP), a transmission company in New York. This was
later increased to 60,000 hp (see Figure 17). The "delivery point" was the
international boundary at the center
of the Niagara Gorge. Three transmission lines extended 6 mi (9.7 km) north
from the powerhouse to a crossing of
the Niagara Gorge (see Figure 19)

where they terminated at the NL&OP
switching station. NL&OP built two
single-circuit transmission lines with
all aluminum-stranded conductors
from the river east to the center of
New York State. Power was delivered
16 mi (25.7 km) to Lockport on 5 November 1905 and an additional distance
of 138 mi (222 km) to Syracuse on 19
July 1906. Total transmission distance
from the powerhouse to Syracuse was
160 mi (257.5 km). Three different size
stranded all-aluminum conductors were
used: 642-kcmil rated at 30,000  hp,
22 mi (35.4 km) from the powerhouse to
Lockport; 428-kcmil rated 20,000 hp,
57 mi (91.7 km) from Lockport to Mortimer (south of Rochester); and 214-kcmil
rated 10,000 hp, 81 mi (130.4 km) from
Mortimer to Syracuse. An excellent
