The on-line Master's program in Electric
Power Engineering in the Department of
Electrical & Computer Engineering,
University of Waterloo, offers advanced,
state-of-the-art, training in Electric Power
Engineering. The Program is designed for
engineering personnel from the electric
power industry, electrical engineering
graduates, and other professionals
looking to upgrade and accelerate their
career in the power and energy sector.
The program offers a full spectrum of
courses, offered over three terms each
year, which are relevant to the power
industry. Courses are taught by
world-class faculty members from the
Department's Power & Energy Systems
Group; one of the best power engineering
research groups in North America.

» Graduate Diploma (GDip) in
Electric Power Engineering:
Awarded on completion of 6 courses

on completion of a single course.

(NMP) 60-Hz system. NMP was the
successor to the Niagara Falls Power
Company, the Niagara Lockport & Ontario Power Company, and the Cataract
Power & Conduit Company. National
Grid (NG) is the successor to NMP.

ceased operation on 11 September 1932
when, due to declining traffic, the IRC
decided to not renew the 40-year franchise. The building was demolished in
1985; a trail plaque marks its location.
The NGRR ceased operations on 17 September 1935 due to a rock slide.

Niagara Falls Park &
River Railway
Early in the 1900s, the IRC's NFP&R
Division cooperated with the Niagara
Gorge Railroad Company (NGRR) to
jointly run trolley cars on a spectacular circular tour of the Niagara Gorge
(see Figures 1 and 21). The two trolley lines were connected by a double
track on the Upper Steel Arch Bridge
and a single track on the Queenston-Lewiston Suspension Bridge.
The IRC re built the powerhouse and,
in 1903, replaced t he d a m aged Canadian Niagara generators with three
200-hp railway generators and added
a 2,000-hp vertical turbine with a
direct connected 1,500-kW railway
generator at the south end of the powerhouse. The railway and powerhouse

During World War II, additional water
was diverted from the Niagara River
to allow increased power production
for war industries. This proved that increased diversion would not harm the
scenic quality of the falls. Following
a 1950 Canada-United States treaty, HEPC started construction of the
60-Hz Sir Adam Beck 2 powerhouse
south of Beck 1 (see Figure  20). Twin
5.6-mi (9.0-km) long tunnels were constructed from above the falls to the generating station, which contains 16 units with
an initial total capacity of 1,290,000 kW.
The plant started production in March
1954 and was completed in 1958. A
pumped-storage reservoir installation
provided an additional 120,000 kW. In
the mid-1950s, a single-circuit 230-kV
