groups, rule books, safety training and
regulations, rescue methods, and new
techniques such as "live-line" work.
Gone was the era in which employers
encouraged workers to take chances to
get the work done.
As electrification expanded, so did
awareness of the significance of the
work, and the lineman began to make
an appearance in novels, songs, and
film. The most famous of these novels
was Slim (published in 1934) by William Wister Haines, a lineman who
wrote from his own years of experience;
it became a 1937 feature-length film
starring Henry Fonda. Several others
followed, most of them largely forgotten. These stories coincided with the
construction of the huge power dams
and transmission lines of the Rooseveltera Rural Electrification Administration
programs, which brought the lineman
greater public recognition. Corporate
recognition came in the form of advertising by power and communications companies, recording the heroics of linemen
in storms, disasters, earthquakes, and
floods. The corporate-brand character
Reddy Kilowatt, often depicted as a lineman, was adopted as a symbol by many
utilities for many years after he first appeared as a representative the Alabama
Power Company in 1926.
Linemen played a major role in
communications during World War I,
but World War II brought greater recognition. At home, the lineman kept the
power flowing for critical war production and transportation, while overseas
he was vital to battlefield communications. Of a conversation he had with a
lineman at work on a pole while enemy
aircraft strafed the area around them,
the legendary general George Patton
wrote, "Now, there was a real man-a
real soldier."
After the war, safety techniques, hard
hats, and protective garments continued
to evolve as awareness of the lineman's
job increased. My Pop's a Lineman,
a short film produced by Wisconsin's
Dunn Electric Cooperative, is the story
of a boy who gets to ride with his father to observe the work. It became a
promotional and safety film screened at

various public halls and schools and is
now available on YouTube.
The book's later chapters focus on
modern equipment, system improvement, "hardening" against natural or
man-made damage, training, and publications. The first women in the field
(though still called "linemen") marked
a new epoch; in time, they advanced
to instructors and management. Lineman's slang, rodeo competitions, new
tools, and advanced communications
systems are described by Drew, as is
volunteer work as far away as Tanzania.
These stories, along with the 1,575
photographs and other images that
make up this book's more than 500
pages, are so impressive they are difficult to capture in a short review. The
son of a utility man, Alan Drew first
climbed a pole at the age of six. After a
career in the industry, he was a founder
of and is now the senior vice president
for research and development with the
Northwest Lineman College. With campuses in Idaho, California, and Texas,
the Northwest Lineman College develops training techniques for teaching and
exporting the trade internationally.
It is obvious that the lineman has
become a true profession, not just an
adjunct of a larger organization. I doubt
that anyone, whether in the industry or
not, after reading this book will ever
again view the lineman's role the same
way: The American Lineman finally
places the craft in the heroic light it

14 chapters and comprehensively covers
the topic of small-signal stability and
control in power systems. The first three
chapters constitute introductory material
and provide a primer on various topics
related to control analysis and design.
These chapters offer readers new to this
topic the requisite background to understand the material that follows.
Chapter 1 introduces the problem of
small-signal stability in power systems
and, within the realm of the electromechanical aspects of synchronous machine behavior, develops the concepts
of synchronizing and damping torque.
Chapter 2 provides a brief tutorial on
classical linear control theory, and
Chapter 3 addresses state-space formulation and aspects of multivariable linear control. The topic of robust control
is alluded to but not formally characterized in terms of the significant modern
developments and results on this area.
Chapter 4 offers detailed coverage
of the development of the small-signal
model for synchronous machines, flexible alternating current transmission
system (FACTS) devices, and loads; it
also introduces the formulation of the
linearized differential-algebraic equations. Two appendices provide further
details about synchronous machines.
Concepts related to tuning a power-system stabilizer using the classical Heffron and Phillip's model for a
single-machine infinite bus system are
introduced in Chapter 5. This chapter
highlights significant details and key
aspects of the small-signal stability
problems associated with modern excitation systems and the role of powersystem stabilizers in providing supplementary damping.
Chapter 6 details the methods
used to tune power-system stabilizers and highlights the significance of
the careful selection of gains. This
outstanding chapter is followed by a
chapter on tuning automatic voltage
regulators. Chapter 7 also introduces
proportional-integral and proportionalintegral-derivative compensators and
