The second article, by Joos, reilly,
Bower, and neal, represents a natural
extension to the lead article and focuses
on the importance for creating proper
standards for microgrid controller functions and testing microgrid controllers.
The doe facilitated the development
of project authorization requests for
two ieee standards, P2030.7 and its
companion P2030.8. according to the
authors, "defining core functions is the
purpose of the ieee P2030.7 standard

initiative. This initiative established
these core functions and takes into account the needs and requirements of
the distribution system operator and
the microgrid operator. it also links the
functional specification to a testing approach, developed in ieee P2030.8.
"The two core functions defined
in the standards for a microgrid control system are a) the dispatch function,
which computes the set point of the
der units and the status of the controllable loads in grid connected and islanded modes, and b) the transition function,
which defines the controller operation
in the transition between grid-connected and islanded modes and in the reconnection process."
The next three articles deal with the
projects awarded by the doe under deFoa-0000997 to the electric Power
research institute (ePri) and national
renewable energy laboratory (nrel),

alstom/ge, and iiT-Bronzeville teams.
The third article, jointly authored by Maitra and his group from ePri and Pratt and
her team from nrel, discusses the expanded role of microgrid controllers and
their performance evaluation by two types
of hardware-in-the-loop (Hil), namely,
power Hil and controller Hil test methods, conceived and implemented by
nrel in their comprehensive microgrid
laboratories. The authors introduce the
concept and the types of microgrids from
their perspective. Microgrid controller requirements and attributes, as they
view them, are described in detail. They
then provide two site-specific examples
of microgrid controller evaluation. They
conclude with the need and justification
for integrating microgrid controllers with
ders and distribution management systems. This is a relatively new topic receiving wide attention and publicity from all
of the stakeholders.
