The Road Ahead
increased usage and benefit realization will become a reality as
more industry members embrace synchrophasor technology and
adopt business processes that integrate installation, operation,
maintenance, and training with technology into routine business
practices; once they do, they will start realizing the benefits.
For example, postevent analysis and model validation
using archived data are two main offline applications of PmU
technology. although most projects aim to achieve improved
wide-area situation awareness capability, the majority fall
within the real-time monitoring category with some basic
alarms. traditional monitoring can benefit from true widearea situation awareness tools for complex events occurring
or when power grid contingencies lead to stressed conditions.
at the same time, many advanced real-time wide-area situation awareness applications require more capabilities. r&d is
needed to move advanced solutions from a conceptual stage
to a mature product. in today's area of emerging technologies,
applications and r&d need to be tightly integrated.
advancements in the application of synchronized technology deployment have also raised awareness on data reliability and availability. Problems can occur once data is generated and packets are transmitted. data can arrive on time,
arrive late, or fail to arrive. these problems encompass a
broad range of possible causes and effects. as large quantities of streaming synchrophasor data are now moving, these
issues have begun to emerge. a number of factors contribute
to issues affecting data availability.
✔ Communication protocols: existing communication
protocols for streaming synchrophasor data create
large contiguous data frames that do not map well to
existing packet-based communication infrastructures.
✔ Inadequate means of data interruption notification:
a key component of a synchrophasor delivery system is
the Pdc notification of data interruptions. Unless user
specified, the Pdc standard does not require the Pdc
to notify the user that data is not being received.
✔ Data availability metrics: a common set of metrics
is needed as an industry guideline. if there are problems with data availability (data arriving late or not at
all), data will be described as "bad." the evaluation of
an industry-accepted standard method for measuring
how much of the synchrophasor data is bad is key to
determine effective mitigation techniques.
the observations, challenges, and lessons from large-scale
deployments are being addressed by various organizations
such as the ieee for Pdc requirements or by various working groups within nasPi for data quality. a number of new
technologies are being tested in programs funded by new U.s.

department of energy grants with the goal of increasing data
availability and reducing communication infrastructure costs.
in summary, synchronized measurement applications require
high accuracy and availability of data, extensive baselining using
both historical statistical data and system simulations, and user
training. the timing for investment in synchrophasor technology implementation should receive high priority and coincide
with other grid infrastructure investments. advances in technology and grid management schemes are modernizing operations and are transitioning from an observe-and-control reactive
paradigm to an integrated proactive vision. next-generation
emss will build on these advances. enhancing the ems with
the integration of fast synchronized measurement technologies
will assist in model validation for ems contingency analysis.
applications such as linear or distributed state estimation will
help with data integrity validation and contingency analysis. an
even more promising opportunity is automated real-time widearea control, by integrating synchrophasor solutions with fast
controls. the power industry is beginning to explore the use
of PmUs at the distribution level for power quality, demand
response, microgrid operation, distributed generation integration, and enhanced distribution system visibility. benefits and
uses of time-synchronized data are becoming clear, and the
value of synchrophasor technology for power system operations
and consumers is growing every year.
