the TSOs to operate the entire system in a secure, safe,
and efficient way.
Online Dynamic System Stability Monitoring
Based on the data collection described earlier, online modal
analysis and related parameter estimation is performed
for the two main CE interarea oscillation modes. The first
approach, which gives very fast results, is based on single
measurement evaluation; see Figure 9.
A second approach, shown in Figure 10, is based on sorting out the participation factors of several measurement locations with respect to their activity in one of the two major
modes described previously. At the same time, due to averaging the results over a time span of a few minutes, the results
are more precise as compared to the first approach.

Offline Applications
The use of WAM data in offline applications varies with the
individual application; the key factor is the flexibility and performance of the historical database. In fact, the critical aspect is
a high sample rate of recorded data to process and analyze phenomena with different characteristics. As an example, the statistical analysis of frequency or damping over one week requires

Conclusions and Outlook
The applications presented in this article give an overview
of some WAM activities of two European TSOs. They also

many samples and might require a significant running time for
the database query. Another typical requirement is the option
to explore data in a moving window (i.e., over several days) to
evaluate the general behavior of the system. For these reasons,
a well-balanced decision between high-performance relational
databases and hybrid file based databases has to be made.
With respect to offline applications, Terna developed a
tool that acquires stored data from historical archives and
executes several calculations, mainly frequency spectral and
modal analysis with various methods; the tool is also able to
connect to the shared region of WAM memory and to analyze
recursive data directly and store the results; see Figure 11.
The stored results can be investigated not only in a visual
way (trend) or a statistical way (i.e., Gaussian dispersion)
but also with trigger criteria, which have been defined (i.e.,
amplitude, duration, threshold violation).
