factory contained elaborate woodworking facilities as well as cupola furnaces
used for the remelting of purchased pig
iron and a foundry for the sand casting
of iron parts.

George Westinghouse, Jr. moved
to Pittsburgh in 1869 and proceeded to
amass a fortune from the development of
railway signaling equipment and the famous Westinghouse safety air brake for

trains. He then used this money to found
the Westinghouse Electric Company.
By the 1890s, Westinghouse had in his
employ both William Stanley and Nikola
Tesla, two well-recognized pioneers in the
early development of ac power systems.
This enabled the Westinghouse Electric
Company to proceed into the development of ac equipment and, in fact, to design and build the 25-Hz generators for
the first Niagara Falls power house. Westinghouse also introduced the use of 60-Hz
power in the United States for general
purpose ac equipment and distribution.
It was not long before GE and Westinghouse became formidable rivals in
the field of electric power. It is somewhat ironic that a Westinghouse factory
(although not a manufacturer of electric
power equipment) happened to be situated
just outside the main gate of the illustrious home plant of GE in Schenectady.
The Westinghouse factory remained in
business for many years as the GE plant
continued to grow. It was gone, however,
by 1922, and, ten years later, the last of
