whether Building 13 was still "pretty."
The comment is made that 40-Hz
power was still being purchased from
outside sources (Mechanicville, etc.)
for as long as it still remained available but that efforts were underway to
retire all 40-Hz equipment as soon as

feasible. It is not known just how long
it took to actually accomplish that task
(see Figure 3).

Edison General Electric plant in Schenectady. In 1894, this station contained
seven reciprocating steam engines
with a total of approximately 1,700 hp.
Presumably, all of these steam engines
drove dc generators at that time (see
Figure 1).
Building 13 remained in operation
for several decades, although with major changes in the actual generating
equipment throughout the years. In
Romance of a Great Factory, a book
written by Charles M. Ripley in 1919,
the following description is given:
Building 13 is 114 feet [34.7 m]
wide and 340 feet [103.6 m] long.
At the extreme northern end is
one of the prettiest engine rooms
imaginable, with red painted cement floor, competing with immaculately clean tile, burnished
brass and polished steel which
is a delight to the eye of anyone
who might be called a machinery connoisseur.
A 1904 article in the General Electric Review mentions a new turbine
power house at the Schenectady GE
plant. This would have been the Building 61 power house that was originally
designated as Building 85 (a renumbering of the plant buildings occurred
at some point). The article also refers
to "the direct current power plant"
that would have been Building 13 (see
Figure 2). Also, a 1904 article in Electrical World refers to four 1,500-kW,
40-Hz turbine-generators in operation
in "Building 85."
A 1945 detailed description of the
GE plant buildings describes the Building 61 equipment as including two
10,000-kW, 40-Hz turbine-generators
that had been installed around 1918, as
well as two 7,500 kW, 60-Hz turbinegenerators which dated from 1941.
In addition, reference is made to
40-Hz turbine-generators in Building
13 that, by 1945, supplied only rotary
converters to produce dc power and
electric furnaces in the steel foundry
(probably electric arc furnaces). The
last 40-Hz rotary converters had been
installed in 1919 and, since then, 60-Hz
motor-generator sets had been provided
