was being provided by the Schenectady
Railway Company. There had been earlier electric power stations in Schenectady,
including the Westinghouse Illuminating
Company station referred to earlier. By
this time, the lighting load had reached a
peak in excess of 1.7 MW, and the electric
railway daily peaks were over 3,000 A dc.
Consequently, the Schenectady Railway Company enlisted the services of
both the Railway and Lighting Departments of GE to design a new substation
capable of handling both of these loads.
This new facility became known as the
Dock Street substation, and it was located just outside the main gate of the
Schenectady GE plant, on Dock Street
along the Erie Canal. Today, this structure is long gone, and its location is
occupied by Interstate 890, an elevated
spur from the nearby New York State
Thruway. The substation building was
165 ft (50.3 m) long by 45 ft (13.7 m)
wide, and the exterior was constructed
of Ashlar (rectangular) brown sandstone blocks and brick, with large
arched windows and terra-cotta trim.
Three-phase, 10,000-V, 40-Hz power was conveyed to the substation via
three underground cables, from a distributing switchboard at the Building
13 power house inside the GE plant. The
main source of 40-Hz power was the
new hydroelectric station at Spier Falls,
supplemented by the Mechanicville hydroelectric station.
In addition, 40-Hz power was also
available from the turbines in the new
Building 61 power house in the plant and,
in an emergency, 40-Hz power could also
be obtained from the plant's dc power
system by running the plant's 40-Hz rotary converters in an inverted (backwards)
mode of operation (see Figure 4).
A portion of the received 40-Hz
power was distributed at 10,000 V
from the new substation to operate
a water pumping plant for the city of
Schenectady, as well as for the operation of outlying substations of the
Schenectady Railway Company, which
powered its rail lines to the cities of Albany and Troy.
In the Dock Street substation itself,
local railway power was supplied by two
