hall accommodated a total of 20 machine sets, each consisting of an 850-hp
turbine and generator (see figure 3).
Twelve sets were to generate dc for electrolytic processes in adjoining electrochemical plants, and eight sets were to
generate ac for light and power for various consumers such as industrial plants,
municipalities, tradesmen's and craftsmen's establishments, or private homes,
all within a radius of about 12.4 mi (20 km)
around Rheinfelden. The plant was
completed in 1898 and offered a total
output of 17,000 hp (12,500 kW), a power level that had not previously existed.

When decisions were being made about
the electrical design on the Rheinfelden
project, the electrical world was confused
