the former power house. Many original
components were carefully restored and
are now witnesses to past technology for
interested visitors. The center of attraction is the vertical-axis machine set no.
10 (see figure 7) dating back to 1898,
arranged on two levels: the complete
generator on top and parts of the turbine
on ground level, complete with the original turbine governor, parts of the control
panel, and many items of power-plant
memorabilia. Outdoors, a walking and
bike trail now follows both Rhine River
banks, with crossings at the old town
bridge and the new power-plant weir.
Also included are the Rathenau and dolivo platforms in tribute to two outstanding pioneers of early electric power.

Rheinfelden is the first iEEE Milestone to be dedicated in Germany. One
Milestone bronze plaque is located in
the information center of the new power
plant. The citation on it reads (in English) as follows:
The original RheinfeldenĀ plant
was an outstanding achievement
in Europe's early large-scale gen-

eration of hydroelectric power. it
was important for its 17,000 horsepower (12,500 kilowatt) output, for
pioneering three-phase alternating
current later adopted around the
world, and using 50-Hertz frequency which afterwards became
standard in most countries. Gradually, Rheinfelden entered into joint

IEEE Milestone, 2014
due to its outstanding historical features
and significance, the old Rheinfelden hydroelectric power plant was considered
to be a worthy candidate for designation
as an iEEE Milestone in Electrical Engineering. Knowing this, the authors of
this article were encouraged to nominate
this historical achievement. The iEEE
Germany Section and the iEEE Power &
Energy Society (PES) Germany Chapter served as sponsoring organizational
units, with the support of and in partnership with the Swiss iEEE organization.
After the customary evaluation process,
the iEEE History Committee recommended Milestone designation, and the
final approval was given by the iEEE
Board of directors in early 2014. The
milestone dedication took place on 25
September 2014 in the presence of dr.
Roberto de Marca, 2014 president and
CEO of iEEE; representatives of iEEE
Germany, Switzerland, and Region 8;
public authorities from both towns and
countries; and numerous other attendees.
The dedication ceremony (see figure 8),
which included other iEEE honors, was
held in the information center of the new
Rheinfelden power house on the Swiss
bank, under the generous hospitality of
Energiedienst AG, and ended with the
inspection of the new plant as well as
by visiting the exhibition pavilion on the
German bank.
