China's Experience at
Managing Disturbances
with High Penetrations
of Wind Generation

range of operation. Most of the wind turbines
were not equipped with fault ride through
(FRT) capability, a critical reason for largescale outages.
Based on studies to determine the reasons for these frequent failures, many
feasible technological solutions were presented by research institutions, grid companies, and wind turbine manufacturers.
The revision of the Chinese Standard GB/T
19963-2011, Technical Rule for Connect-
ing Wind Farm to Power System, specified stricter requirements for wind farms,
clearly stating that wind farms must have
FRT capability and wind turbines that had
been retrofitted with FRT capability and
undergone testing according to applicable
testing standards, such as the Procedure
for Testing Low Voltage Ride Through Ca-
pability of Wind Turbines (standard NB/T
31051-2014).
In this article, FRT problems associated
with large-scale wind power integration
are examined. With the sustained, rapid
growth of wind power installations, the
influence of wind generation on the power
system became significant. Thus, there was
an urgent need to study the increasing risks
of large-scale wind turbine tripping. We
discuss typical events involving the loss
of large-scale power generation in China;
these events are analyzed in detail, revealing the reasons for the behavior. We also
elaborate on technical standard formulation, measurement and testing, wind turbine
FRT retrofit, and large-scale staged disturbance experiments. In conclusion, some
new problems and challenges emerging in
China with large-scale wind power integration are discussed.
