the largest hydroelectric facility in the world, a title it
retained for a number of years.
The planning and operation of the system was especially
challenging due to its large size and remote, harsh location.
since the generating facilities in northern Québec were situated more than 1,000 km from the main load centers in southern Québec, hydro-Québec developed an extensive, extrahigh voltage (ehV) 735-kV transmission system to bring the
power south (Figure 1). complicating factors included the iso-

lation of the hydro-Québec system (no synchronous link with
neighboring systems), the great distances between generation
and load, and the concentration of generation at large hydroelectric sites (85% of total hydroelectric generation is located
in large, remote, northern hydroelectric complexes). although
the 735-kV transmission system is very extensive (more than
11,000 km of 735-kV lines) it has a relatively limited number
of lines located in two main axes: the La Grande (James bay)
western axis and the churchill-manicougan eastern axis.
