Topeka Relocation Guide 2008 - (Page 21) Guests Find the Unexpected at The Woodward Topeka in Profile The Woodward Area locals and tourists alike enjoy escaping to The Woodward Inns on Fillmore Street. With six historic homes on the same block, The Woodward is the cornerstone of Topeka’s Holliday Park. The eclectic homes fascinate visitors while offering a relaxing and entertaining atmosphere. Elizabeth Taylor, the proprietress who looks after the six enchanting homes, has transformed the houses by redecorating each with a special theme. She stays busy planning the activities and packages offered by The Woodward, as well as preparing all of the meals. Activities such as the Valentine’s Murder Mystery Dinner and The Woodward Tea Club are just some of the programs available. The Woodward also offers such get-away packages as the Whirlpool Package, which includes a relaxing hour on the pool deck followed by breakfast in bed the next morning. The Pillow Talk Overnight is another entertainment option that offers a good, old-fashioned slumber party, including games, movies, snacks, and optional manicures and pedicures. The Woodward, a castle-like chateau, was built in 1920 with old English Tudor architectural elements. Its spacious rooms can be used for weddings, wedding receptions, dinners, business conferences, and lodging. Taylor has organized more than 600 weddings at The Woodward and her careful attention to detail makes it a home away from home for each of her clients. “Here, it’s all about you,” Taylor said. “You will get a family feel that will always be here for you.” The historic block at 12th and SW Fillmore streets comprises one mansion, two other executive homes, and three family homes. The Woodward was Taylor’s first renovation. The cobalt blue and gold theme gives the old mansion a warm and elegant feeling. The Woodward Max, another of Taylor’s projects, is an executive home. Peter Max, one of Taylor’s favorite modern artists, influenced her decorations in this home by displaying some of his artwork. By adding character to the modern-themed house, the blue peacock polish pottery pieces are used for formal dinners. The last executive home is Topek a Reloc at ion Gu ide 20 08 The Woodward Executive. Each executive home offers an elegant dining area and conference area. “The executive homes are wonderful during the week, especially for business travel,” Taylor said. “I can give travelers more than a nice hotel can, with reasonable prices.” The Woodward Garden House, The Woodward Garden House II, and The Woodward Annex are the three family-style homes. One unexpected surprise tucked away among The Woodward’s historic homes is a Caribbean Pool Garden. “You’ll think you are in some sort of oasis with that Caribbean feel,” Taylor said. The heated lap pool (open year-round) remains a perfect 91 degrees in the winter and 88 degrees in the summer. The pool is surrounded by a beautiful trellis, chaise lounges, a fire pit, and tropical plants that set a tranquil mood. Taylor hopes to make every visitor to The Woodward Bed and Breakfast feel special and welcome. She wants people to enjoy the resort-style accommodations where it is all about them. n By Holly Robbins, Chamber intern 21
