Topeka Relocation Guide 2008 - (Page 6) Library Upgrades Services Since the 1870s, the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library has been a strong presence. It began modestly with the ladies of Topeka wanting a place where people could come together to discuss stories and news. It’s likely none of those ladies could have guessed the importance the library would come to hold in the community. This unique public library combines an inviting feel with a new contemporary look. In 2002 the library building expanded, offering more ways for people in the community to become involved. Everyone is invited to come and experience what the library has to offer. The library provides 10 well-equipped meeting rooms that are free of charge to governmental institutions and non-profit organizations. “It is special because the library has always been supported by the interest of the community,” said Diana Friend, public relations manager. “Not only is it supported by the community, but by businesses in the community as well.” With book clubs, story time for tots, arts and crafts for teens, and more, this library has something for everyone. The library offers a collection of more than half a million books, music titles, audio books, and movies. Visitors are encouraged to browse through the Alice C. Sabatini Art Gallery and enjoy the cuisine at the Millennium Café. The three galleries of the Alice C. Sabatini Art Gallery, located near the entrance of the library, showcase Topeka’s oldest public art collection. Another service the library offers is the ever-popular Bookmobile, which delivers the most popular items on reading lists to more than 20 locations in Shawnee County. Topekans appreciate the convenience of having the library’s many and varied titles come to them. “The Bookmobile has all sorts of books, everything you would find at the main library but not in the same volume,” Friend said. “We try to have a good selection for everyone.” Keeping current with the times, computer specialists are currently working on digital access to the library and public input is both sought and valued. “As we redesign our web site we will have focus groups to see what people are looking for,” Friend said. The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library is a public service by the people and for the people. As Friend said, “Our primary focus is serving the community.” n By Holly Robbins, Chamber intern 6 Topek a Reloc at ion Gu ide 20 08
