Registering a Car All residents must register their cars at the Shawnee County Treasurer’s Office. If bringing a car in from out-of-state, it needs to be inspected first. T aking Care of Pets Helping Hands Humane Society: The Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Road, serves as an advocate for animal welfare and provides sanctuary for animals in need of compassionate care and protection. Helping Hands also fosters the adoption of healthy animals into responsible homes, reunites lost animals with their owners and reduces overpopulation by promoting sterilization of animals. The organization can be reached at 785-233-7325. www.hhhstopeka.org 24-Hour Vet: There are several 24-hour or after-hours veterinary clinics in the Topeka/Shawnee County area. Please consult the local telephone directory. Licensing Your Pets: The Topeka Animal Control Unit is responsible for the issuance of dog and cat licenses. These licenses may be obtained at the Animal Control Office at the Law Enforcement Center, 320 S Kansas Avenue. This office is open to the public Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Registration forms also are available at the Helping Hands Humane Shelter and various veterinary clinics and may be mailed to the Animal Control Office. The annual license fee for a neutered dog or cat is $5.00. For an unneutered dog or cat, the fee is $8.00. Bark Park: Hill’s Bark Park gives dogs an opportunity to run and play with other dogs in a leash-free controlled environment. Hill’s Bark Park is located in Gage Park in a former softball field surrounded by a six-foot fence near Gage Park’s southeast corner. The city created the park in 1999 and has added trees, benches, a drinking fountain, a double-gated entrance and other amenities.
