Shawnee County also offers a free household hazardous waste disposal service located at 131 NE 46th Street on the first Saturday of every month (except January and July) from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Utility Capacity Electric Service Westar Energy, Inc. is the largest electric utility in Kansas, providing service to about 675,000 customers. Westar Energy has about 6,500 megawatts of electric generation capacity and operates and coordinates approximately 33,000 miles of electric distribution and transmission lines. The company employs nearly 2,400 people throughout its large service territory in eastern Kansas. www.westarenergy.com Gas Service Kansas Gas Service is the largest natural gas distribution company in the State of Kansas with more than 640,000 customers statewide. www.kansasgasservice.com Telecommunications SONET based fiber optic services, as well as Frame Relay, ISDN, ATM, ADSL, Ethernet, MPLS, VOIP, IP-based services, VPN and high speed Internet access, are common throughout the Greater Topeka area. Digital, wireless, IP services and long distance service are provided by a number of carriers. Kansas enjoys one of the most sophisticated and reasonably priced telecommunications systems in the nation, thanks to its state-ofthe-art technology and the competitive advantage of its central location. In order to maintain this leading-edge position, well over $200 million is invested annually in new technologies and related infrastructure development. Water Source The Topeka Water Division produces and distributes an average of 25 million gallons of water a day to over 165,000 people in Topeka, Shawnee County and the surrounding areas. Sewage Treatment Plant Topeka’s state-of-the-art wastewater treatment capacity is 17,000,000 MGD (average dry weather flow) at three water pollution control plants, one in the Oakland area east of downtown and the Sherwood Wastewater Treatment Plant in southwest Shawnee County. The plants run at approximately 60% capacity. Keep America Beautiful – Topeka/Shawnee County The KAB – Topeka/Shawnee County program celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2008.
