T opeka Arts Community Grows through ARTSConnect Topeka is a growing arts community. In fact, Southwest Art Magazine ranks Topeka 12th among the top 25 emerging arts towns in the western half of the United States. Indeed, this recognition represents a significant milestone for ARTSConnect, whose goals are to position Topeka as an arts community, strengthen arts organizations and help the community gain access to the arts. ARTSConnect achieves its goals through direct fundraising and workplace campaigns. Connecting the Community to Artists Started in 2006, ARTSConnect helps fund local art organizations in Topeka/Shawnee County through contributions and grants. Member organizations include the Topeka Symphony, Topeka Performing Arts Center, Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy and the Mulvane Art Museum. Among the most visible of ARTSConnect projects are First Fridays Art 3 River Photography Walks. The first Friday of each month, 605 S Kansas Avenue art galleries throughout the city invite Topeka, Kansas 66603 the community to “open houses” from 785-215-1426 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Connecting Kids to Musical Instruments “Share the Music is a new ARTSConnect project that connects kids with band and orchestra instruments,” says Kathy Smith, executive director of ARTSConnect. “We collect used and new instruments and donate them to local elementary and middle schools for students in need who would otherwise not be able to participate in band and orchestra programs.” Smith says the instruments are thoroughly cleaned and repaired before they are donated to the school systems. ARTSConnect has received a variety of instruments, including flutes, trombones, a violin, drums and an accordion. All of these instruments were put to use, she adds. Smith encourages everyone to consider ARTSConnect as they relegate no-longer-used musical instruments to the basement or attic.
