Shocking Event HUNTINGDON — One evening in late August an anxious neighbor told me a hawk was entangled in electric lines atop a utility pole just around the corner from my house. Upon investigating, I found the hawk nearly upside down, with both legs caught on opposite sides of an insulator. After several phone calls, PGC dispatcher Lisa Hoffman located the correct utility company from the pole numbers I called in. The utility company dispatched a lineman from Hollidaysburg, where they were dealing with a large power outage at the time. As it turned out, the hawk freed itself after being trapped for more than two hours. However, I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank REA utility company for sending a lineman as a public service to the Game Commission to free the hawk. The lineman was only a few minutes away when we called to cancel the service request, but it’s nice to know that these companies that often go unnoticed until we lose power are willing to go the extra mile to help wildlife. — JUSTIN VREELAND SC WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT SUPERVISOR, HUNTINGDON Go Figure BERKS — When asked why he was trespassing on private land to search for a deer he had shot, an individual stated, “Because the last time the landowner threw me off his property he wouldn’t tell me where he lived, so how could I ask permission?” — WCO DAVE BROCKMEIER, MOHNTON Wasn’t Even Wearing Mask HUNTINGDON — I was leaving my dogs out prior to going to bed one night when I realized that my truck had been broken into. I put the dogs back inside and went to investigate. I determined that the suspect was approximately three foot tall, fourlegged and black in color with muddy feet. I also determined that the suspect made off with some donuts, bagels and raisin bread. Then, a few days later, the culprits returned, in broad daylight. — WCO AMY NABOZNY, PETERSBURG Good Day All Around SOMERSET — I would like to thank members of the Maple Leaf Rod and Gun club of Meyersdale for hosting the annual Youth Field Days. The day was a huge success, with area youngsters participating in archery, muzzleloader shooting, .22 rifle shooting, clay bird shooting, and instruction on turkey hunting, trapping, and education on snakes. This was all made possible due to the generosity of local businesses and donations of individuals’ time and talents. Special thanks go out to Rich Stoner, Bob Smith and the Somerset County Sportsmen League for organizing and raising support for the program. The day concluded with the group observing a bear being processed by Southwest Region officers and staff. — WCO BRIAN WITHERITE, MEYERSDALE NOVEMBER 2008 Not An Option A 911 center forwarded a cell phone call to dispatcher Lloyd Dell from a distressed hiker on a woods trail who came across a bear in the center of the trail that refused to move. Lloyd advised the hiker that he had two options: A) Wait for the bear to leave, or B) Walk around the bear and continue on to his vehicle. The caller suggested option C, though: He wanted someone from the Southcentral Region Office to come out and pick him up and take him to his car. — DON GARNER, SC REGION I&E SUPERVISOR, HUNTINGDON 39
