Lock, Stock & Barrel The Shooters’ Corner By Jim Romanelli By Don Lewis Sheds T LOOKED like a snag, a piece of brown wood sticking out of the snow, but when I reached down, what I picked up was a moose antler. In late January I was snowshoeing in Victory Basin, a remote forested area ringed by mountains and drained by a river called the Moose. Eight inches of snow lay on the ground. Along the woods road I had spotted gray jays, ruffed grouse, red-breasted nuthatches and evening grosbeaks. Coyote, moose and deer tracks marked the snow. Earlier in the winter a wildlife biologist had reported finding lynx tracks in the basin. The antler was 18 inches long and 6 inches across. It had six points, each about six inches in length; probably it came from a 3- to 4-year-old bull. It was dark brown on its outer side, paler brown on its inner side. A spot of blood on its base told me that the antler had been recently shed. Stashing the antler behind a rock (I’d get it on the way out), I resumed walking, now with my eyes scanning the ground rather than searching the trees for birds. More than 5,000 moose inhabit Vermont, and the Northeast Kingdom, where I live, has the densest population. I’d seen half a dozen moose in Victory over the last few years, including a massive bull with a great palmated rack with a lot of points and a wide spread hovering above his long, blunt-nosed head. Like the males of other deer species, bull moose grow antlers in the spring, use them as weapons when fighting during the autumnal rut, and shed them in winter. My snowshoes glided across more moose tracks. There was a large clearcut ahead, and it seemed that the moose were using the road to get to the cut, where they could browse on the dense regrowth of hardwood shoots and saplings. After about a mile my heart gave a little leap when I spotted another antler lying on the edge of the road. It was much larger than the first one, about 30 inches from top to bottom and 9 inches across. It had nine points, some short and rounded, others — including the brow tines — long and sharp. The antler was in perfect condition, unmarked by the gnawing of rodents, which quickly attack sheds for the calcium they contain. I walked another hundred yards and found the match to the antler I had just picked up. It was the same size, with the same number of points and the same mahogany color. It, too, had escaped damage from gnawing. I looked up at the blue dome of the sky and the surrounding snowy mountains and knew this was one of my best days afield. Holding one heavy antler under one arm and the other under the other arm, I turned my webs around. I found the smaller cached antler, which I lashed to my daypack.
