Another Perspective ’VE NEVER been much for electronic technology, especially when it comes to computers. But I came across some computer technology that’s a virtual gold mine. And two prominent aspects of it are, one, it’s free, and, two, it’s so easy to use that even I can do it. I’m talking about aerial photography maps. Aerial photos are nothing new. They’ve been around longer than airplanes, as they were first taken from manned balloons. They were a great breakthrough to warfare technology in World War I, and have been a boon to many commercial ventures as well ever since. Sportsmen have also been using them for years. I’ve often read that some of the best professional trappers hire pilots to fly them over their proposed trapping grounds prior to the season. It’s a lot easier and faster finding things such as new beaver dams from the air than it is from the ground. But for most of us, the cost of this can be prohibitive, so aerial maps are a good second choice. Aerial photos that are printed out do have some drawbacks. For one thing they cover only one specific area. If you’re buying your photos this way, the specific place that you’re interested in might be very close to the edge or corner of one of these photos. That means that you’ll have to buy at least two or as many as four different photos to cover the area you want. You will also have to try to fit the different photos together to give you a complete picture of what you want to I see. That’s not always easy to do. Another problem is their scale. They are set at a fixed scale which can leave out a lot of detail. You can look at them through a magnifying glass, but that still doesn’t help much. Fortunately, today’s computer technology has eliminated these problems and has added some other benefits that the standard aerial photos can’t begin to offer. There are quite a few aerial photo map sites on the Internet, but I prefer PASDA because I deal solely within Pennsylvania. PASDA stands for Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access. These aerial photo maps contain a wealth of information for the outdoorsman. I’ll walk you through the steps necessary to get you started and then give you some ideas on how to put these maps to use. To get to that website go to www.pasda.psu.edu/mapping/. Once there you’ll see a box in the upper left-hand corner of the screen with the words “Pa Imagery Navigator” in it. Click on that and it will take you to a map of Pa. You’ll see another box in the upper left-hand corner titled “Map Navigation.” In it you’ll see “Find a County” with a scroll down box. Click on the scroll down arrow and then click on the desired county name. Now you’re going to be looking at a map of the county you’ve chosen. By Kirby Neubert MARCH 2009 25
