Feed an Army for Thanksgiving TIOGA — HTE instructor Daniel Grinnan was driving past SGL 37 near the Hammond Reservoir when he noticed what he thought was a very big turkey near the road and pulled off to get a better look. The bird picked its head up and it stood taller than Danny’s truck. The bird turned out to be an emu. Two days later, in the same area, while tending his traps with fellow HTE instructor Bill Crossley, two llamas walked by. Where these critters came from has not been determined, but it stands as a testament to the diverse wildlife our game lands support. — WCO RODNEY P. MEE, WELLSBORO It’s the Law Every year while visiting processing plants to age deer and collect tag data our team is disappointed in seeing the number of hunters who don’t follow the proper guidelines when tagging deer. We find deer tags attached to antlers or even legs. Tags must be attached to the ear of a deer and remain there until the animal has been processed for consumption or prepared for mounting. — FORESTER FRANK VINISTKI, POTTSVILLE Do They Pay Fare? FULTON — On the first day of bear season my first call was to pick up a bear that had been killed on the Turnpike. That was the eighth roadkilled bear on the pike last year. — WCO KEVIN L. MOUNTZ, WATERFALL It Happens YORK — We are pleased to welcome Matthew Miller to the ranks of deputies here in the southwestern part of the county. Deputies Kevin Clouser, James Staub and I have only one bit of advice for Matt. When completing a major illegal deer case involving multiple subjects and numerous violations, never lock your keys in your vehicle at midnight in the middle of nowhere. This kind of action tends to dampen the spirits of your fellow officers when they have to drive 40 miles to pick up a spare set of keys at your house and deliver them back to you. We’ll chalk this one up to a rookie mistake. — DEPUTY GEORGE ERSKINE, YORK Smile BRADFORD — LMO Rich Lupinsky and I were on patrol when Rich noticed something odd hanging from a tree not far from a remote hunting camp. As Rich walked into the woods I called after him to watch out for trail cameras. Just as I caught up to Rich, in my peripheral vision I noticed a trail camera overlooking an automatic feeder. I said to Rich that it was too late, we were on camera and to smile. If the owner of the trail camera and photos would like an autograph, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. — WCO JOSEPH WENZEL, ATHENS 32 That’s Gotta Hurt DELAWARE — A hunter I know, Ed, told me that he was a driver on a deer hunt, and while pushing through some heavy multiflora rose his fellow hunters heard him yelling, but they couldn’t get to him. After some time Ed emerged from the brush with an 8-inch piece of multiflora rose hanging out of his nostril. He was unable to pull it out because of the way the thorns were curved. After a trip to the hospital and a lot of harassing by his buddies, he was able to return to the woods. I’d say he was “hooked” on hunting. — DEPUTY RICHARD SIMPSON, GLEN MILLS GAME NEWS
