tremely flat shooting big game cartridge, but with normal sporting length barrels of 22 inches, it delivered less than the already popular .270 Winchester ballistics, plus, barrel throats burned out a lot quicker. So the .264 Win. Mag. began to lose its appeal, and now there are no rifles chambered for it. But there are enough existing firearms out there that ammunition is still being produced on a limited basis. America’s next attempt came in 1966 when Remington introduced its 6.5 Remington Magnum. This was based on the Remington .350 Magnum belted case, which was short and wide, with a 25-degree shoulder (kind of reminiscent of today’s short magnums). Its paper ballistics was pretty impressive, but in all practicality, the initial rifles with the 18½-inch barreled Model 600 and the later M660 with 20-inch barrel fell short of what today’s short magnums produce in velocity. There were only two factory loadings, 100- and 120-grain bullets. For handloaders, the short chamber throats of the rifles didn’t allow use of the heavier, 140-grain bullets, which needed to be seated out farther, rather than taking up powder space, limiting their ballistic potential. For a short time Remington chambered it in the longer-barreled M40x, as well as the Model 700, to allow the cartridge to reach its ballistic potential, but neither was a success. Even Ruger chambered the M77 for the round sometime in the 1970s, but with hardly a ripple in sales. The cartridge was really a good idea, but a longer throat and longer barrels for heavier bullets would have made it a more versatile cartridge. Needless to say, the 6.5 Remington Magnum never gained much popularity, and is now pretty much in the obsolete pile. Rifles haven’t been chambered in it for many years, and if you find a box of cartridges, there’s probably a lot of dust on it. While I was in college, a friend bought a used Remington Model 600 in the 6.5, which included several boxes of cartridges. 62 His thought was that this rifle/cartridge combination could be the all purpose ticket. When we went to the local sand pit to try it out, I couldn’t get over the muzzle blast, which was greater than any rifle I had ever shot. I remember thinking then of what a waste of power it was. Several months later my friend must have come to the same conclusion, because he sold the rifle and bought a used .270, and never regretted it. The 6.5 mm cartridges in America were pretty much dead for the next 20 or so years, until the 1990s, when importers of surplus firearms brought over old stockpiles of the well made Swedish Mauser Model 96 chambered in the 6.5x55 Swedish cartridge. They came in standard rifles, carbines, and target versions. It wasn’t long after that American sportsmen began to take notice of its moderate but effective ballistics. In Europe it was the best of the bunch as far as 6.5 cartridges went. It had built a well deserved reputation as a light recoiling, tough game getter, as well as a superb target round out to moderate ranges (600 meters). The cartridge started out with 156- to 160-grain round nose bullets, but later changed to a 140-grain spitzer bullet that reached around 2,600 fps. These ballistics were produced from the Mauser 96, but in the more modern designed bolt guns (Mauser 98, Winchester Model 70, Remington 700, etc.) we learned that the velocity could be upped by 100 fps without pushing the pressure envelope. Quickly the American firearm manufacturers began rolling out their bolt actions, and bullet/ammunition companies brought out a range of cartridges loaded with bullets that ranged from 87 to 160 grains. It would fill the bill from varmints to big game. I used to shoot a .30-06, Springfield “03” for competition, and I don’t mind admitting that my scores would take a bit of a slump toward the end of a match due to recoil fatigue.
