Friends & Flat Tails By Zeke Wilson N THE YEARS that I have trapped, many friends have come to me with similar questions. “Can you help me catch a beaver?” or “Do you know where there are any beaver?” is the usual start of these conversations. While, for a variety of reasons, I am not the beaver trapper I once was, I can never turn down the opportunity to show someone the art of trapping. The allure of beaver trapping, along with the desire to step back in time and get a taste of what the fur trade was like, has brought a half-dozen friends to my door. I’m sure that at a young impressionable age, discussing North America’s oldest industry has something to do with such interest. Then, too, is that in Pennsylvania it seems to be the the most remote and wild places that beavers call home. Regardless of my friends’ motives or interests, I have always been more than willing to have a new and eager partner along for a ride on the trapline. Unfortunately, the area where I re- I side is basically void of beavers. The Allegheny River is the nearest large water body, and is a good 40-minute drive south of my home. The West Branch of the Susquehanna sits to the north at about the same distance. Large rivers allow for healthy beaver populations, because of the untrappable nature of the banks where many beavers live. The tributaries of these rivers encounter dispersal in the early spring as young beavers are evicted by their parents. These traveling beavers move up smaller streams and establish themselves where sufficient food is found. The trout stream-sized waters and smaller tributaries that do intersect my area, occasionally become home to a traveling beaver, but do not hold strong populations. These waters are too accessible by road, due to the populated area in which I live. Before there is a chance for beavers to really establish themselves, someone takes the opportunity to catch them in their first year. Occasionally, a colony is missed, which quickly sends young beavers out on their own as they explore new territories. This phenomenon is why beaver dams spring up over night in areas that never had beavers before. Even with a fairly small population of beavers and the hour-long drives involved in scouting and setting for these construction specialists, I try my best to trap at least one beaver a year.
