Didn’t Get Away With It ALLEGHENY — On the day before spring turkey season I received a call about a poaching incident. The caller, who was scouting for a place to hunt the following morning, told me that he heard some turkeys, and as he looked over the crest of a hill he heard a shot. While scanning the area with binoculars he noticed a turkey flopping around. He then watched an individual put the bird in the back of a vehicle and drive away. After arriving, I discovered feathers, blood and some shot pellets in the hillside next to a turkey feeder. Based on the description of the individual and the location of the incident (being near a house), my deputy and I were able to track the individual down at his place of work. When I approached him he had a somewhat shocked look on his face. When I said, “I think you know why I’m here,” he looked at the ground and said he did. He was cited for multiple Game Law violations, and other violations turned over to the Fish & Boat Commission. A big thank you goes out to the sportsman who got involved and immediately reported what he saw. — WCO DAN PUHALA, PITTSBURGH Managing Habitat HUNTINGDON — The Southcentral Region conducted several prescribed fires in the spring on warm season grass plots and forested areas. These burns will help enhance wildlife habitat for all wildlife species. — PGC FORESTER BRENT MCNEAL, HUNTINGDON Above and Beyond ADAMS — I was checking turkey hunters in the Michaux State Forest when I came across a hunter who had gathered up a sizeable pile of trash that others had previously dumped along the road near his parking space. If there were more people like him than there are litterbugs, our natural environment would be a far more beautiful place. — WCO DARREN J. It will be great to have WCO Derek Daly back on duty in my neighboring district in the northeastern section of the county. Thanks for your service to our country. — WCO DENNIS R. WARFEL, HOLTWOOD Golden Fleece HUNTINGDON — I have two golden retrievers that shed a lot, but I’ve noticed that this is a big benefit to the songbirds in the area. After watching chickadees, wrens, phoebes and robins with a beak full of dog hair, I noticed how they were lining their nests with a plush layer of golden hair. I was wondering if I left my doors and windows open if those same birds would come in the house and clean all the hair off my floors so I don’t have to vacuum. — WCO AMY NABOZNY, PETERSBURG GAME NEWS Will Be Missed BEAVER — Not many of us will live out our dreams or touch as many hearts as retired WCO Douglas C. Carney. His passing has left us with a huge void. The wonderful memories that we each hold dear will help us to weather the storm, though.
