Never Know What You’ll Find FAYETTE — I recently set a bear trap near a personal care home after receiving a call about a bear getting into the dumpsters. After the second day I was pleased to find the trap door closed with a large black figure inside. Upon closer inspection, though, I found a 90-pound rottweiler dog peering back at me. Thankfully, the rottweiler was more interested in getting out of the trap as opposed to having me for dessert. — WCO JASON D. FARABAUGH, SCOTTDALE Good Clue VENANGO — At a local Earth Day event, I was quizzing the elementary students about the mounted animals I had displayed. The students easily identified most of the mounts, but one particular animal caused much debate among the students. Their answers included ferret, badger, mink, wolverine, even mongoose. Trying to recall the name of the animal, one student told her classmates it was named after something that did not eat fish. Apparently the clue helped, because in a few moments two students correctly identified it as a fisher. — WCO CLINT J. DENIKER, FRANKLIN Movin’ In YORK — We are fortunate in my district here in the southwestern end of the county to have two active bald eagle nests. I began monitoring one close to York City this year and the adult pair produced two eaglets. — WCO CHAD R. EYLER, YORK Deadly Food Chain All Tied Up PIKE — Spring turkey hunter Paul Grathwohl was calling in a gobbler when he realized he had to get to a nearby tree quickly, as the bird was coming in fast. Crossing a small opening, Paul was almost busted by some hens that were heading his way. He immediately dropped to his knees as the hens continued to feed toward him and, luckily, the birds didn’t notice him. Kneeling motionless for more than 40 minutes, the gobbler finally presented a shot. He was ready, but his legs were numb from the hard ground pressing on his kneecaps. The tingling was getting unbearable, but he thought it would all be worth it in just another moment. Unfortunately, Paul found out that you can’t shoulder your shotgun when the sling is pinned under legs that no longer had any feeling in them. He watched helplessly as his trophy followed the hens over the hill. — WCO ROBERT JOHNSON, MATAMORAS AUGUST 2009 While on my travels recently, I noticed a roadkilled fox, rabbit, opossum and raccoon, all within 20 feet of each other. I had to wonder who decided to cross the road first? PGC WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST STEPHEN REPASKY, APOLLO Wonderful Technology JEFFERSON — District judges now have a computer system that allows them to access arrest warrants throughout the commonwealth. Recently, I was given arrest warrants for two individuals who had been found guilty back in 1998 and 1999. I asked for help from WCOs Ken Packard and Gary Toward, in whose districts these people lived. The warrants were served and fines collected. To say the least, these two individuals were surprised and none too happy about the long arm of the law reaching out from the distant past to force them to pay their fines. — WCO MICHAEL A.
