We all had made a new friend in this old farmer, but I was still troubled by what he had said, and now I was kicking myself for not telling him how we all felt. What do they say about hindsight? Right there I decided to show my appreciation to him and his family by sending a big box of candy and a pack of gift certificates for one of the local movie theaters. Later, while lying in bed, I thought about something that I had been guilty of taking for granted for years. Since the time I was a youngster, property had by tradition been open to hunting, and on the rare occasion I saw a no trespassing sign, it was only because the landowner had had a bad experience with someone. My grandfather, also a farmer much like the landowner who had let us hunt, had always offered a cheerful greeting to strangers who wanted to hunt our farm, and never once when he graciously shared the gift of his land to them did I hear him ask for a thing in return. I believe the following quote by Aldo Leopold conveys well how farmers and landowners feel about their property and help one understand how great this gift truly is: “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us.
