washed away is also a losing proposition. Add all these elements together and you’ll understand why I’ll stay comfy at home, relax in my easy chair in front of the fireplace and read the latest issue of Game News instead. Altitude How high (or low) can you comfortably place your treestand? For me, my elevation comfort zone generally averages around 20 feet, but that depends on topography and other conditions. I realize that’s higher than most archers hunt, and plenty of deer have been arrowed from stands 15 or even 8 feet off the ground. The kind of stand you use also plays a role. Most ladder stands offer perches from 10 to 15 feet high, with some extensions pushing the maximum altitude to 20 feet, but the sturdiness inherent in these stands, along with the ease of ascent and descent, imparts a degree of confidence that may be missing with hanging stands with clumsy, randomly spaced screw-in steps, or climbing stands that may be affixed to questionable trees. Acrophobia or not, some people just have a fear of heights. I suspect that this afflicts a smaller percentage of the bowhunting versus general population, though. Angle of Attack Two concepts of angle come into play with any shot. The first is a factor of stand elevation relative to the distance of the shot. Stands placed at great heights can create severely angled shots at deer. On deer within 5 to 10 yards, some shots can approach 90 degrees (virtually straight down). The problem with such steeply angled shots is that the deer’s vital area becomes compressed and harder to hit. The preferred double-lung shot may be rendered virtually impossible. There is a sound argument here for stand placement at more reasonable heights, say 10 to 12 feet versus the 20 yours truly prefers. The lower the stand, the less compressed the deer’s vitals will appear as it draws close, making for a (hypothetically at least) less difficult shot. I’ll still opt for the advantages a higher stand offers. I know from experience and practice that such a steeply angled shot falls within my comfort zone, but maybe not those of other archers who would never venture higher than 10 feet. The second concept concerning angles is determined by the direction the deer is facing relative to the hunter’s position on stand. While this may not be an important consideration for firearm hunters, it’s absolutely critical for bowhunters. From where any ethical bowhunter sits (or stands) the only acceptable shot on a deer should be the broadside or shallow quartering away shots (less than 45 degrees), and although some archers may advocate quartering shots on approaching deer, that’s an angle that obscures the animal’s vitals behind its leg and shoulder, and is not a shot that should fall within any self-respecting bowhunter’s comfort zone. Positioning of Stand The size and positioning of any treestand goes hand in hand with elevation as a factor of literal comfort. How long can you remain secure, relaxed and alert in your stand? If you’re precariously balanced on a narrow wooden beam at an awkward angle (been there, done that, by the way), odds are you won’t last an hour. On the other hand, if the base of your stand is plenty wide and sturdy (maybe even carpeted) and the seat is padded and cushy, you could probably settle in for the whole day without a single cramp setting in. Other important creature comforts on a stand include a thermos of coffee or water, a few snacks, a conveniently located bow hanger, a well secured harness and fall restraint system, and plenty of room to maneuver when a deer finally does appear. While these features may describe the ideal stand, in many cases archers are forced to make compromises. One of my favorite and most productive stands sits about 20 feet high, fitted GAME NEWS
