Coincidence? CRAWFORD — I was returning a book about beagles to the library when I received a call to pick up a roadkilled deer. After writing down the location of the deer, I had to chuckle because I knew I had a Field Note. Of all places, the deer was located on Beagle Road. — WCO MARIO L. PICCIRILLI, LINESVILLE Developing Trend After reading the January Field Note from WCO Dennis Warfel about the cricket leaping out of a shotgun shell in his pocket, I remembered something. A few years ago when WCO Warfel and I were patrolling the Susquehanna River by boat, a smallmouth bass jumped out of the water and landed at my partner’s feet. After a few laughs and a photo of Dennis holding his prize, the bass was released. — LMO JONATHAN S. ZUCK, EVERETT Future Reference VENANGO — Another deer aging season has come to a close and I’d like to thank the deer processors in Erie and Crawford counties for allowing us into their facilities to gather data on harvested deer. This year instead of handwriting all of the data like in prior years, we started using Nomad handheld units to scan hunting licenses. With these units and the new harvest tags with the PALS system licenses, we are able to scan the license and CID numbers directly into the machine and then enter the rest of the data we are required to collect. I would also like to thank the hunters who filled out their harvest tags with ballpoint pens, as these were the most legible. — PGC FORESTER TAMMY TIMKO, PLEASANTVILLE “Huh?” FRANKLIN — Deputy Dustin Ulrich was checking hunters during the firearms deer season when he came across a young man who wasn’t wearing the required orange hat. In collecting information, Dustin asked the man his eye color. He replied blue. Dustin then asked the man for his hair color, and he again replied blue. Thinking he misunderstood, Dustin again asked for his hair color. The man again replied blue. The hunter then pulled off his knit cap and, sure enough, he had bright blue hair. Had it been fluorescent orange, he would have been in compliance. — WCO BARRY LEONARD, CHAMBERSBURG Unbelievable HUNTINGDON — During the first day of the firearms deer season, I stopped to check a small group of hunters who were at their vehicles. When I asked if they had had any luck, one young man replied that he missed a trophy buck. After asking to check their licenses, the individual who was so eager to tell me he had shot and missed the big buck quietly replied that he did not have a hunting license, but then stated that he was not hunting, but only sitting with his grandfather. I reminded him that he had already told me of the buck he shot at. His reply then changed to he didn’t know he needed a license to hunt. When that excuse didn’t work, he stated he didn’t have $20 to buy a license. Unfortunately, his fines will be much more than the license fee he should have paid. — WCO AMY NABOZNY, PETERSBURG MARCH 2010 Missing the Boat MONROE — I was surprised by the lack of hunters on our State Game Lands this season, but those who were out seemed to find game and didn’t mind the lack of pressure. — WCO SCOTT MALICKY, MOUNTAINHOME
